The publication of the banns is a procedure having for utility to make public the imminence of a Mariage, and thus to take care that nobody opposes it.

History

The publication of the banns of marriage is not a republican invention . It existed well before the introduction of the civil wedding, already in the Christian tradition, where it goes back to the councils of Lateran (in 1215) and of Thirty (in 1563) which made obligation of the publication of the banns before the ceremony. This measure is intended to fight against the consanguineous unions , between cousins and close relations. It is not then possible any more of convoler in clandestinity.

In France

The Civil law French stipulates that the publication of the banns is obligatory. The publication of the banns is a publication posted on an official panel in each place where the engaged couples reside. It has had to be posted for at least ten days so that the ceremony can be celebrated. It is consultable for one duration of a year as from its inscription.
