Public school (the United Kingdom)

Traditionally, in England and with the Wales, the term Public School indicates a private school whose recruitment is not limited by geographical restrictions nor religious but by very high expenses generally. Recently this term evolved/moved more generally to indicate of the private schools for old pupils from 13 to 18 years. In general the term returns to very old and prestigious schools and not of recent private establishments.

  • Westminster , one of most eminent, located close to the abbey of Westminster at the center of London, its history goes up before XIIe century. It accommodates young girls in first and final. It had as pupils Ben Jonson, George Herbert, John Dryden, John Locke, Sir Christopher Wren, Henry Purcell, Edward Gibbon, Jeremy Bentham, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Andrew Huxley, (Nobel Prize), Sir Peter Ustinov, Helena Bonham Carter, Dido.
  • Winchester , rested by royal charter of Richard II of England in 1382.
  • Eton, founded in 1440 by Henri VI of the England, most famous. Attended by the Prince William of the United Kingdom.
  • Saint Paul , founded in 1509 per John Collet, senior of Saint-Paul, on a ground in the north of the cathedral. Among his former students one finds John Milton, Samuel Pepys, Gilbert Keith Chesterton.
  • Shrewsbury , founded in 1552. Charles Darwin was pupil there, like Michael Palin, the creator of the Monty Python. It should accommodate young girls in the near future.
  • Merchant Taylors' School , founded in 1561 by members of the honourable company of the merchants tailors. Located at the origin in the City it is installed today in Northwood in the northern suburbs of London.
  • Rugby , founded in 1567 by Lawrence Sheriff, a tradesman of the city. The school accepts the girls into final since 1975. It became mixed in 1995. It is at the origin of the Rugby.
  • Harrow , founded in 1572 per royal charter of the Queen Elizabeth Anger of England granted to John Lyon.
  • Charterhouse , in Godalming in Surrey, most expensive. Based in 1611 in London by Thomas Sutton on the site of old chartreuse.
