Public records of Tunisia

The public records of Tunisia , whose seat is with Tunis, gather the historical documents of the Tunisia to political character, administrative, cultural, economic or social.

The main mission of the public records is:

  • to work with the safeguard of the national inheritance archivistic
  • to take care of the constitution, the conservation, the organization and the use of all the funds of files of the services depending from the State, the local government agencies, the establishments and the companies public, the private organizations in charge of management with a public service and public officers
  • to collect, preserve and communicate the archivistic sources referring to Tunisia and being abroad

Under their current organization, the public records of Tunisia are controls by the Décret n°97-389 of the February 21st 1997.

History

Within the framework of a whole of political reforms operated during second half of the 19th century, the first service of Archives of Tunisia is created in 1874 under the name of Center of correspondences of the State and is attached to the great ministry which has as a seat the Dar El Bey. This service is charged to gather the public documents by transferring them from the palate of the Bardo and by collecting them near the senior officials and of the dignitaries of the State. These documents are organized according to elaborate technical methods having also related to the organization of the communication of the documents and their restitution.

During the French protectorate, the more complicated management of the files deveint because of administrative complexity and the redundancy of certain functions. The documents concerned with the business interior Tunisian are gathered in a service named “service of State”. On the other hand, the documents managed by the technical directions for more the share are lost. Lastly, the documents concerned with the Résident general of France in Tunisia are gathered and transferred in France where they concern the quay of Orsay.

In 1955, the services of the presidency of the Council are reorganized and the general files of the government take the name of general files . In 1967, the secretariat of State to the presidency knows a new structuring and the administration of the files becomes the division of the general files and documentation . With the creation of the first ministry and the organization of its services (decree n°70-118 of the April 11th 1970), the old denomination of the administration of the files changes to become the division of the general files .

Beginning 1999, the services of the public records are transferred from the first ministry to their new seat located at number 122 of the boulevard of April 9th, 1938 in Tunis.
