Public records of Scotland

The Public records of Scotland ( National Files off Scotland , denomination which replaced in 1993 that of Scottish Record Office ) depend on the Scottish executive created by the laws of devolution of the capacities in 1998. The first attempts to organize the files of the Scottish State date from the 13th century, but it is only at the 16th century that is created a register house in the Château of Edinburgh. The disorders due to the civil war at the next century however carry these files a considerable wrong, at the same time by destruction and transfers of part of the funds of files to London from where they all will not return. In 1765, the decision is taken to build a building ad hoc for the files, but its construction, started in 1778 under the direction of the architect Robert Adam, proves particularly hard because of budgetary restrictions. Its prolonged state of incompletion (only the carcass work heavy castings were built) is worth to him the nickname of “pigeon expensive of Europe”. Finally inaugurated in 1789, the General Register House is thus the oldest building specifically built for files with being still of use, since the buildings of files created with on the continent had been it by refitting of existing buildings. A second building, West Register House , is built of 1811 with 1814 within Robert Reid. It is refitted and increased 1968 with 1971. Finally an appendix of a capacity of 37 kilometers linear is built in the west of Edinburgh in 1994.
