Public records of Ireland
The Public records of Ireland ( National The Files off Ireland - Cartlann Náisiúnta Na hÉireann ) are the agent of the official files of the Irish State. Create by the National Act Files in 1986, the service began its activity in 1988 and took the place of State Paper Office and the Public Record Office off Ireland.
In 1991 the Public records are moved in their current site: Bishop Street with Dublin.
State Paper Office (founded in 1702), was originally based in the Château of Dublin. The Public Record Office off Ireland was created in 1867 and was based with the law courts (Four Courts) to join together in a single place all the documents administrative and legal. During the Civil war, the building which sheltered all these documents of which some dated from the 13th century was destroyed just as the majority of the files.
In 1922, at the time of the partition of Ireland and the creation of the free State of Ireland, the Public Record Office off Northern Ireland was created and recovered all the files relating to it. The funds of the Public records of Ireland gathers:
- files of the Irish Government of 1922 with 1975;
- files of the British administration in Ireland of and centuries (One counts there also some documents of XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries);
- legal files since the 14th century;
- files coming from other sources such as for example the parishes Anglicans of the Church of Ireland, the administration of the ports, the hospitals, of the schools, trade unions, companies, lawyers and land registers of XIXe and XXe centuries;
- transcriptions, extracts or indices relating to the originals dating from XIIe and destroyed in 1922;
- of the personal records like those of the Taoiseach: Jack Lynch and Liam Cosgrave.
