The kind Pterophyllum belongs to the vast family of the cichlidés .

Its members have the characteristic to be equipped with a very compressed body laterally and Nageoire S dorsals and anal very lengthened. They have powerful muscles to actuate their pectoral fins which they use to move.

The geographical distribution of the Pterophyllum is localized around the basin of the the Amazon. Their Biotope consists of acid, very soft water and of low current. They live mainly in zones of branches and roots immersed.

They lay their eggs on broad and solid sheets of watery plants, and, like the majority of the cichlidés , supervises them in couple, as their alevins (although this behavior tends to be lost in captivity, where certain specimens do not hesitate to devour their offspring).

Their peaceful behavior and their majestic aspect make of them snuffed hosts of the aquarists.
