Pteridophyta
The very wide grouping of the ptéridophytes was introduced in systemic taxonimy as a division into the vegetable kingdom ( Plantae ), at the beginning of phenetic phylogeny (by comparison of a limited number of morphological analogies of characters) as of the 19th century, to distinguish, among the Cormophyte S (practically all classified today among the Trachéobionte S), the more said species “ archaïques ” of the other grouping even more important of the other plants cormophytes known as “ évoluées ”, then named Anthophyte S (this second grouping of the plants with seeds, included/understood two divisions of the Gymnosperme S and the Angiosperme S distinguished since Antiquity, and practically all classified today all among the Spermaphyte S or Spermatophyte S).

Traditional classification (morphobiologic)
The ptéridophytes ( Pteridophyta ) under classified into four under-divisions :- the subdivision of the équisétophyte S ( Equisetophyta ) - of which the Prêle S
- the subdivision of the Lycopodiophyte S ( Lycopodiophyta ) - of which the Lycopod S
- the subdivision of the Ptérophyte S ( Pterophyta ) - of which the Fern S
- the subdivision of the Psilophyte S ( Psilophyta ) - of which the Psilotum S
However, this taxon traditional was not based on the current genetic methods, but only on the characters morphobiologic. Cladistic the phylogenetic modern one (based on the genotypes) however altered this traditional grouping.
Phylogenetic classification
The ptéridophytes ( Pteridophyta ) do not form a taxon monophyletic and are classified according to phylogenetic classification currently connue :- in the clade of the Polysporangiophyte S ( Polysporangiophyta ) :
- in the clade of the Euphyllophyte S ( Euphyllophyta ) :
- in the clade of the Lycophyte S ( Lycophyta ) :
- the subdivision of the Lycopodiophyte S ( Lycopodiophyta ) - of which the Lycopod S ;
- in the clade of the Moniliforme S ( Moniliformopsida ) :
- in the clade of the Sphénophyte S ( Sphenophyta ) :
- the subdivision of the équisétophyte S ( Equisetophyta ) - of which the Prêle S ;
- in the clade of the Filicophyte S ( Filicophyta ) :
- the subdivision of the Ptérophyte S ( Pterophyta ) - of which the Fern S ;
- the subdivision of the Psilophyte S ( Psilophyta ) - of which the Psilotum S ;
- the clade of the Spermatophytes does not contain any ptéridophyte current.
