A psychological environmentalist is a specialist in the relations between the man and his environment, considered from the psychological point of view.

Its field of study extends on the types of relations which exist between the individuals and their medium of life: either the man within the built framework, or the study of the relations which the man with the mediums and the natural resources maintains. The difficulty of really including/understanding the object of study of this specialist is explained by the multitude of the mediums of life with which are confronted the individuals (work environment, the residence, the district, the city, social environment: meeting places and of leisures, places of contact with nature, perceptions of the natural resources…) The environmental psychologist specializes under precise field.

History

In the years 1950, interrogations emergent in connection with the role of the environment in the care taken to the mentally ills. In France, in the United States, like in Sweden, of many work are realized on this topic. In parallel, the architects expressed a need to include/understand the user, in order to provide him a framework of life adapted to its needs. Then the discipline was interested in various topics: the urban Stress, urban harmful effects, pro-environmental behaviors… This discipline which is environmental psychology, is fields of the psychology little known, but which has many competences and specificities to be brought to our company.

Utility of environmental psychology

The majority of the studies are ordered by territorial collectivities, town halls, or ministries, which wish to have an opinion, and to be advised on a precise aspect which question them. For example, the Town hall of Paris called upon a psychologist environmentalist in order to include/understand why the antennas relay of mobile telephony are the subject of rejection whereas almost everyone has a cellphone.

The psychologist environmentalist has a specific approach centered on the individual, in order to include/understand his needs, his motivations, his mechanisms of operation, with an aim of improving quality of life of the individual.

Methodology

He uses the talks, questionnaires, x-ray group, behavioral cartographies, ways with accompanying notes. At the border between all the under-disciplines of psychology (social Psychology, differential Psychology, Psychology of the development…) environmental psychology draws methods, or creates of them some starting from the other under-disciplines of psychology.
