After war

The city is touched of full whip by the Economic crisis in the years 1970 and 1980. Many immigrants of African origin settle there. The Plaine Saint-Denis which was the greatest industrial park of Europe becomes the largest industrial waste land of the continent.

After 1998

Since the inauguration of the Stade de France, inaugurated on January 28th, 1998, the city which had known a serious economic decline is again in full rise, in particular in the district of the Plaine Saint-Denis. The dynamism around the Stade de France was reinforced by the impact World cup 1998. This dynamism continues since 2000 in an inter-commune structure (of which the Plain of France is the heart): Plaine Commune.
This structure gathers from 2005 eight cities: Saint-Denis, Aubervilliers, Villetaneuse, Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Epinay-sur-Seine (founding members), the Island-Saint-Denis, Stains (since 2003) and Courneuve (since 2005). Initially chaired by the mayor of Villetaneuse Jacques Chicken, Plaine Commune is directed since January 2005 by Patrick Braouezec, Député and old Maire of Saint-Denis.

Beyond the stage itself and new image that it gives to the city, of the assets remain of the World cup 1998, like the prolongation of the line 13 of the subway towards Saint-Denis - University.

The experiment of the multiple competitions held since the World cup 1998 are an asset for the candidature of Paris for the Olympic Games of summer of 2012, in which the city is very implied. Alas, the failure of the French candidature compromised the implication of the State in certain operations, like the trams in projects towards Sarcelles and Villetaneuse.

In November 2003, Saint-Denis accommodated with Paris the second European Social forum.

March 26th, 2006, a poll illegal but supported by the majority of the leaders of the left was organized on the question of the right to vote from non-European abroad with the local elections. This poll considered to be illegal by the administrative court of Cergy on February 23rd, was organized by the communist mayor of Saint-Denis, Didier Paillard and was supported by personalities like François Holland (PS), Marie-George Buffet (PCF), Dominique Voynet (Verts), Olivier Besancenot (LCR), Arlette Laguiller (LO), Danielle Mitterrand (PS) and Mouloud Aounit (MRAP).

In September - October 2007, Saint-Denis accommodated the World cup of Rugby.

Economy

Of 1975 with 1995, Saint-Denis undergoes a great industrial crisis on the district of the Plain of France. The Audio-visual development of the studios S - the territory is principal national center of production Audiovisuel, cannot compensate for this hemorrhage. An inter-commune awakening will bring to the creation of Plaine commune, which will be very strongly instigated by the construction of the Stade de France.

End 2004, the installation of new tertiary companies in particular around the Stade de France results in the existence of 60000 employment public and private on the city, which corresponds to the level which had been reached with most extremely of the industrial period. In 10 years, Saint-Denis counts 462 companies moreover (+ 23  %), of which many establishments of services: The SNCF, AFNOR, Generali, Arcelor… and a strong number of health care institutions (Afssaps, Biomedicine agency, High health official, French Establishment of blood…). However, the workers of the site are often employees coming from other zones and the rate of Chômage of the city remains very strong (17  % beginning 2005, 4200 RMIstes in 2006).

With the Cannes festival 2005, the realizer and producing Luc Besson announced to have buckled the financing of the Cité of the cinema, pole professional of the Cinéma, which must be the hexagonal equivalent of Cinecittà to Rome or Pinewood with London. The opening of the pole, on old site EDF of the district of Pleyel is planned for 2007.

The municipal Budget rose in 2005 to 183 million euros.

Transport

The city is irrigated by several major lines of transport, the historical station and railroad, then in particular since 1992 (tram T1) and especially 1998 (prolongation of line 13 with the University Paris-8, news stations the RER B and D near the stage…), heavy public transport in the city remains incomplete. The residential districts of the East remain with the variation and the connections with the difficult surrounding cities.

Prolongation of the line 12 in 2010, station Proudhon - Gardinoux with the Plain in limit of Aubervilliers then 2012 (terminus Town hall of Aubervilliers) will make disappear a black spot.

However the line 13, principal service road of the city is overloaded more and more. The autonomy of one of the two branches north with an automatic subway in a line 15 is inescapable, but without precise horizon. The line is thus likely to remain intolerable a long time at the rush hours. Its prolongation towards Stains is not considered in a foreseeable horizon.

The prolongation towards Gennevilliers by the Island-Saint-Denis of T1 about 2010 will finally make it possible to open a true connection with the department close to the Hauts-de-Seine and the town of Gennevilliers (by the Island-Saint-Denis).

The realization of a tram says Tram' there at the beginning of the Door of Paris towards Épinay and Villetaneuse is extremely threatened by disengagement of the State of franciliens public transport, nothing to say its southern junction with the future Evangile station of the RER E in the district of the Door of Aubervilliers. The realization of another tram at the beginning of the place of May 8th, 1945 towards Sarcelles is even more nebulous. As for the Tangential North towards Sartrouville, it also unceasingly deferred.

Heavy public transport of the city and beyond the department will thus remain long enough insufficient.

Administration

Intercommunality

Saint-Denis is member-founder of the Communauté of agglomeration Plaine Commune, which extends on eight cities, and plays a fundamental economic part with the doors of Paris.

  • the Canton of Saint-Denis-South is made of part of Saint-Denis as well as part of Saint-Ouen and commune of the Island-Saint-Denis (31  615 inhabitants).

List successive mayors

The city is communist since the Libération. It was it since (at least) 1930 with Jacques Doriot, before his exclusion of the PCF and its evolutions towards the Collaboration. Doriot having been constrained with the resignation in 1937, the Communist and resistant future Fernand Grenier reconquers the city (and the seat of deputy).
