Provincial park Copahue
The provincial Parc Copahue in Argentine is an protected area located in province of Neuquén, including/understanding the Eastern slopes and the crater of the volcano Copahue, at the border Chile enne. It protects also the superb landscapes from the higher course of the Río Agrio and its torrent-like affluents, intersected with multiple cascades. The park is located upstream Lac Agrio called also lake Caviahue. The locality nearest, bases excursions in the park is Caviahue, built on western bank of the lake. Its surface is of 180 000 hectares, is 180 square kilometers. Before the quaternary glaciations, all the area of the basin of the lake Agrio drained its water towards the Pacific Ocean, contrary to today. Indeed the large volcanic eruptions of the quaternary time and the enormous associated lava flows, barred the passage towards the west and forced water to move towards the east, towards the Atlantic Ocean. These enormous lava flows came from a volcano now extinct and located at the North-West of the thermal baths of Copahue, as well as other minor craters. This lava created mesetas or plates which go down today in a spread out way.
Excursion towards the crater of Copahue
The current volcano was born there is only 7 000 years (2 997 meters of altitude). Its crater, accessible in particular to horse, is in form of " V" and opens towards a ravine located at the east, 300 meters lower. A small lake of more or less three hectares fills it and receives an important rainwater contribution and cast iron of the ices in winter. The gases going up by the chimney of the volcano heat it at a temperature of more or less 30-40 °C, and bring to him various acids (sulphuric and clorhydric) like various minerals like the Magnésium, the Sulfur, the Calcium, also of the Ammonia, etc the Río Agrio has its birth here, then runs out towards the east, the Lac Agrio
An excursion with horse to the crater takes about six hours, that is to say a small day.
Hike of Río Agrio
It is a circuit organized and marked out which makes it possible to go up, since the locality of Caviahue, the río Agrio in direction of the volcano, then to go down again by another way. One meets there a group of four cascades of an extreme beauty, surrounded by trees autochtones centenaries. The cascades are, upwards: " Del Basalto" cascaded; (Cascade of Basalt), " Cascaded of Culebra" (Cascade of the Grass snake), " Cascaded Will cabal It of Virgen" (Cascade the Lady of the Virgin) and " Del Gigante" cascaded; (Cascade of the Giant). Throughout the way one will be able to also admire the superb trees Araucarias or Pehuens, the lenga S, the ñires, and many other species autochtones moreover.
