Provincial museum Emile Verhaeren
In 1955, a provincial Musée Emile Verhaeren was created in Belgium with Saint-Amand, birthplace of the poet and art critic Emile Verhaeren, of Flemish but French-speaking origin. Mr Rene Gevers, a grand-nephew of the poet, installed the museum in the house of the Vat on the quay. The collection consisted mainly of works of art, in all kinds of books and objects.
In the Years 1960, Mr Gevers withdrew his collection. A new collection was gathered and the administration of the house of the Vat was taken again by the tourist office Klein-Brabant/Scheldeland.
In 1982, from Antwerp provincial government became owner of the building and the collection. With the participation of the province, private commune and funds, since January 1st, 1995 the company a.s.b.l. Emile Verhaeren is entirely responsible for the policy and the administration of the museum.
Since 1997, the museum is lodged on the first floor of the “communal Hearth the Lion” in the Emile Verhaerenstraat. This building, entirely restored, formerly formed part of the native house of Emile Verhaeren.
