Provinces of Turkménistan
The Turkménistan is divided into five provinces (into Turkmène welaýat in the singular, welaýatlar in the plural) and of an independent city ( şäher ), the capital Aşgabat.
The provinces are directed by a governor ( veli ). The provinces are subdivided in districts ( etrap in the singular, etraplar in the plural).
History
Following the independence of Turkménistan on October 27th, 1991, the government keeps the contour of administrative divisions of old the Soviet socialist République of Turkménistan but changes the names them:
- the oblast of Achkhabad becomes the province (welayat) of Ahal and the capital is Annaou;
- the oblast of Krasnovodsk becomes the province of Balkan and the capital is Nebit-Dag;
- the oblast of Tachaouz becomes the province of Dashhowuz and the capital is Dashhowuz;
- the oblast of Tchardjou becomes the province of Lebap and the capital is Chärjew;
- and the oblast of Mary becomes the province of Mary with Mary for capital.
