Provinces of Thailand
The Thailand is divided into 76 provinces (Thai: จังหวัด, changwat , singular and plural), divided into five groups. The name of the province is identical to that of the capital city, which is sometimes preceded by Mueang (or Muang) to avoid confusion with the province. Except Songkhla, the capital is also more the big city in the province.
Bangkok, province the most populated, is also that which with the highest population density. The largest province by its surface is Nakhon Ratchasima, smallest Samut Songkhram. Mae Hong Its in the lowest population density, Ranong smallest population (according to the census of 2000).
Each province is managed by a governor named by the Minister of Interior Department, the only exception is Bangkok, where the governor is elected.
Thailand is subdivided in 796 districts (Amphoe) and 80 minor districts (King amphoe) . The 50 districts of Bangkok are called khet (เขต), but even in the official documents they are sometimes indicated like amphoe. The number of amphoe differs from one province to another and varies from 3 in the smallest provinces with the 50 urban districts of Bangkok.
