Currently (2007), the Indonesia is divided into 33 Province S ( propinsi ). Since 2000,7 new provinces were created by separation of existing provinces. The last in date is that of Western Sulawesi, created in 2004.
Of the 33 provinces, 5 have a special statute:

- the " special territory of the capitale" or Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta (DKI),
- the " special territory of Yogyakarta " or Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta ,
- the province of Papua,
- the province of Western Papua.
Subdivision
The provinces, except Jakarta, are divided into
Kabupaten (departments) and into
Kota (cities), which in their turn is divided into
kecamatan (districts), then in
Desa (villages whose chief is elected by the population) and
kelurahan (common directed by an official appointed by its hierarchy).
Jakarta is divided into five kota .
Governor
The special provinces and territories are directed by a governor elected by the direct suffrage at the end of a law voted in 2004. In 2006 were held for the first time of the elections of the governor by the direct suffrage in two provinces, Papua and
Aceh. In 2007, it is in particular the special territory of the capital
Jakarta which elected its governor by the direct suffrage.
The governor is responsible in front of the provincial assembled (DPRD Provinsi: Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah Provinsi ), itself elected by the direct suffrage every five years (the last elections go back to 2004). In the case of Yogyakarta, the governor is traditionally the sultan, currently Hamengku Buwono X.
