Province of the North-West (South Africa)

The province of the North-western is a province of the South Africa since 1994.

Its chief town is Mafikeng.

History before 1994

Recent history

This province was created at the end of the Apartheid. It includes/understands grounds formerly pertaining to the Transvaal, the the Cape Province, and to old the Bantoustan of Bophuthatswana.

Demography and economy

The population at the time of the census of 2001 is of 3.669.349 inhabitants.

The majority (65,4%) of the population is of language Tswana, just like with the Botswana which is in the north of the province.

The minority of language Afrikaans (7,5% of the population) is very important on the economic plan.

The mines and agriculture are preeminent.

Policy

Politically, the province is dominated by the ANC but it remains there a strong presence of the paramilitary groups of extreme-right-hand side. The White are mainly Afrikaner S conservatives.

At the time of the municipal elections of March 1st, 2006, the ANC gained 76,57% of the votes of the inhabitants of the province.

Tourism

The principal tourist site of the province is the complex of Sun City creates by Sol Kerzner.

Service road

The principal international service road is the international airport of Johannesburg in the province of the Gauteng.

The large provincial airport is that of Mafikeng/Mmabatho.
