Province of the Border-of-North-West
The Province of the Border of the North-West is smallest of the four Province S of the Pakistan. Its Chef-lieu is Peshawar. The principal language is the Pashto.
The area was in the beginning part of the ancient kingdom of Gandhâra (with the Cashmere and Eastern Afghanistan). Thereafter, it belonged to the kingdom of Shahi. In modern times it was integrated into the Empire moghol. In 1747, when the domination of moghole crumbled, the tribes held a " loya jirga" , i.e. a meeting and decided to join the empire of Durrani, while preserving a Pachtoune autonomy.
During the British reign in India, these territories became part of the NWFP (Province of the Border of the North-West) of British India . After independence in 1947, a referendum was held, the province voted to become area of Pakistan.
Certains Pachtouns calls this province Pakhtunkhwa which wants to say “Ground of Pachtouns” in pashto, other Pakistani call it sometimes Sarhad in Ourdou.
In 2005 the population of this area is approximately 21 million inhabitants without counting the 3 Afghan million Réfugié S.
