Province of Tosa
Tosa (土佐国; - No kuni) is an old province of the Japan which was in the current prefecture of Kochi on the island of Shikoku. The province was bordered by the provinces of Iyo and Awa.
The capital of the province was located close to the modern city of Nankoku. During the Period Sengoku, the province was directed by the Clan Chosokabe which unified it in 1575. The clan lost control of it after the Bataille of Sekigahara. Tosa was then entrusted to Kazutoyo Yamauchi.
The province was rather poor and felt the lack of a powerful castle to protect it. After Sekigahara, Kochi became the most important city of the area, thanks to the castle that made there build Kazutoyo Yamauchi, which it is still today.
