Province of Sassari

Sassari is one of the eight provinces of the Sardinia.

Geography

The town of Sassari, capital of this province, is of nuragic origin . It is the most important city located in the north-western part of the island. It includes/understands in north the plain of Nurra, the headland of Stintino and the island of the Asinara which close the Gulf of Asinara. In the south, one notices a vast series of mountains and the plates of volcanic origin of Logudoro.

Downtown, several monuments are worthy of attention: the Gothic cathedral of style and Spanish baroque, the church Holy-Catherine, Gothic with influences of the Rebirth. The center of the city is vast Piazza d' Italia or the inhabitants meet for their traditional walk. From there one can go down along famous Corso Vittorio Emmanuele, through the small streets of the old city.

In addition to Sassari we find Alghero, old Catalan city, currently great center tourist whose it is necessary to point out the activity of fishing and the agricultural activity of a fertile back-country.

More in the east always in seaside draws up Castelsardo whose medieval old city is preserved in any sound charms.

The May 9th 2005, 25 communes of the province of Sassari were detached from it, after the provincial elections to constitute the essence of the Province of Olbia-Tempio lately created on the historical area of the Gallura.

Policy

In an area rather of right-hand side, at the time of the provincial and municipal elections of the May 8th and 9th 2005, the results were the following:
  • - finally, the mayor of Sassari is from now on Gianfranco Ganau, also of Olivier with 58,1% of the voices.
