The Province of Messine ( Pruvincia di Missina in Sicilian) is an Italian province, in Sicily. Its provincial capital is Messine.

Geography and Demography

The surface of the province is of 3.247 km ² (12,6% of the surface of Sicily), and its population is assembled to 662.450 (2001, 13% of the total population of the island). It includes/understands 108 comuni .

The province includes/understands the Wind Îles, being part all of the commune of Lipari (except the island of Salina). Its territory is mainly mountainous except for some alluvial plains with the mouth of the various rivers. The largest plain is located between Milazzo and Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, which with Messine, forms an urban surface of approximately 500.000 inhabitants, one of largest of the Southern Italy. The majority of the population concentrates on the coasts since the cities on the hills were deserted at the 19th century.

The principal assembly lines are the mounts Peloritani (until 1300  m) and Nébrodes (until 1,900  m), which belong to a regional natural park.

The most remarkable rivers are the Alcantara and Pollina which forms the border with the Province of Palermo in the west.
