The Limbourg is a province of Belgium located in Flemish Région.
It is located at the North-East of the country and is bordering on the Netherlands (in north and the east), more precisely on the Dutch Limbourg and the Brabant-Septentrional , and, inside, in the west, of the Province of Antwerp and the the Flemish Brabant and in the south of the Province of Liege. The province has also a Exclave between the Netherlands and the Province of Liege: the commune of the Fourons, place of intercommunity problems between Flemish S and Walloon S
The province is resulting from the transfer to the Netherlands, in 1839 (Traité of the XXIV articles), of the oriental party of Limbourg (Right Bank of the Meuse as well as the town of Maastricht). The surface of the Belgian province of the limbourg in common does not have anything with that old the Duché Limbourg (which covered part of Dutch Limbourg and current province of Liege), but it preserved the armorial bearings of said Duché.
Most of this province, before the French occupation, belonged to the Principauté of Liege: it was the Comté of Looz and the part thioise of the district of Hesbaye (Tongres).
At the beginning of the 20th century, Limbourg, which was primarily rural, changed when one started to extract from the coal of his ground.
Today, its economy is extremely diversified, with industries of construction of cars, chemical, and a sector of services which starts to develop. The town of Hasselt became beautiful and pleasant town of intermediate size.
