The province of Liege is a Walloon Province of Belgium.
This province has as a place chief the town of Liege, its surface is of 3 862 km ², for 1 040 297 inhabitants. It is composed of 84 communes divided into four administrative Arrondissements: Huy, Liege, Verviers and Waremme. Is province belonged, before 1920 and the Traité of Versailles, with the Prussia (towns of Eupen, Malmedy, Saint-Vith).
Situation: It is located at the south-east of the Belgium and the east compared to the Walloon region; it is next to the provinces of Limbourg, the Walloon Brabant, Namur and Luxembourg and has transnational borders with the Luxembourg, the Germany and the Netherlands.
Areas: the province of Liege consists of several areas, namely: The Hesbaye in north and the west, the Condroz and the Famenne in the south, the Ardenne in south-east and the Country of Herve in the North-East.
Communications: the province has an important highway network towards the Belgian big cities and the adjoining countries as well as connections TGV (Thalys) and ICE in station of the Guillemins, towards Brussels and the Germany. The Port authority of Liege and the Aéroport of Liege are also two important logistic tools under development. The networks of water way allows easy communications towards Antwerp via the channel Albert, towards the north and the south of the Europe via the Meuse.
This province counts 9 German-speaking communes (which form the German-speaking Communauté) located at the east of the province in the administrative Arrondissement of Verviers. To note that two communes are known as with Facilités linguistic. In other words, although they are French-speaking, the citizens can express in German with the administrations. They are the communes of Waimes and Malmedy,
The province of Liege forms part since 1976 of the Euregio the Meuse-Rhine.
The province of Liege is also a made up political institution:
of the provincial College (anc. permanent delegation) , government of the province: in Liege it is made up of 8 members: the governor, 6 deputies provincial of which a deputy-president (anc. permanent deputies and first deputy ) and the provincial clerk.
Competences of this institution extend on the territory from the province from Liege and relate to matters such as the family, teaching, housing, the sports, tourism, health, childhood, the culture, youth, agriculture, the formation, road work, the rivers…
The Governor of the province is Michel Foret since October 1st 2004. The president of the provincial College is André Gilles since November 2006.
