Province of Elqui

The Province of Elqui is located in the Région of Coquimbo at the Chile.

Communes

This province is subdivided in 6 communes.

Higuera

Higuera is limited to the west by the ocean Pacifique, to the east by the Argentine and to the south by the communes of Vicuña and Serena.

Its surface is of 4158,2 km ², its population in 2002 was of 3  721 inhabitants. Two thirds of the population lives in rural environment.

Vicuña

Vicuña is limited to the west by the commune of Higuera, Serena and Andacollo, in the east by the Argentine and in the south by the communes of Paihuano and Rio Hurtado.

Its surface is of 7.609,8 km ², its population in 2002 was of 24  010 hab. It is a mainly rural and mountainous commune.

Serena

Serena is city and common at the same time. It is the capital of the province of Elqui in the Región de Coquimbo.

It is located between the Pacific Ocean, the commune of Higuera, the commune of Vicuña and the communes of Coquimbo and Andacollo. Its surface is of 1892 km ² and its population in 2002 was of 160.148 hab.

This city has as principal attraction its colonial architecture preserved very well as its seaside which has a hotel capacity among most important of the country. It is, with Iquique, Viña del Mar and Pucón one of the four vacation centres most visited in summer.

Serena is also one of oldest the city of Chile rested by Spanish at the 16th century.

Paihuano

With 107 kilometers of Serena, in splendid Vallé of the Elqui, is the locality of Montegrande. Located in the commune of Paihuano, it has 400 inhabitants. It is in this village that famous the poet Gabriela Mistral, Nobel Prize of Literature, passed part of his childhood, and there was professor. It is as there as it is buried.

Coquimbo

Coquimbo is limited to the west by the Pacific Ocean, in north by the commune of Serena, in the east by the commune of Andacollo and in the south by the commune of Ovalle. Coquimbo is also the capital of the area. It is a wearing of average importance, located on a course opposite the town of Serena. It is a city which is from its history and geographical location less favoured than its rich and tourist neighbor.

Its surface is of 1  429,3 km ², its population in 2002 were of 163  036 inhabitants, alive in majority in urban areas.

Andacollo

Andacollo is limited E the west by the commune of Coquimbo, in north by the commune of Serena, in the east by the communes of Vicuña and Rio Hurtado and in the south by the commune of Ovalle.

Its surface is of 310,3 km ², its population in 2002 was of 10  288 inhabitants. It is the only commune of this province which saw its population decreased with the difference in the others, of which Serena which is it, increased of a third in 10 years.
