Province of Chishima
Chishima (千島国, - No kuni) is an old province of the Japan which was created during the Meiji era. It included in the beginning the islands Kouriles later from the island of Kunashiri in north then from the island of Shikotan. This territory belongs to the Russia since the Traité of San Francisco.
History
- August 15th 1869, the province is established is divided into 5 districts.
- 1872, the population is of 437 inhabitants.
- November 1875, the prefecture of Karafuto is yielded to Russia in exchange of the Kouriles islands (treated St Petersburg). The province is increased of 3 new districts.
- January 1885, the island of Shikotan is transferred from the Nemuro province to the Chishima province and becomes a new district of the province.

- Shibetoro (蘂取郡)
- Shikotan (色丹郡)
- Uruppu (得撫郡) (acquired with the treaty of St Petersburg, yielded to the treaty of San Francisco)
- Shimushiro (新知郡) (acquired with the treaty of St Petersburg, yielded to the treaty of San Francisco)
- Shumushu (占守郡) (acquired with the treaty of St Petersburg, yielded to the treaty of San Francisco)
