Province of Chieti
Chieti (in Italian, Provincia di Chieti ) is a province (a department) of the area of the the Abruzzi, in Italy. Its chief town is the town of Chieti.
Geography
This province extends on 2.587 km ² and has a population of 382.000 inhabitants. There are 104 communes in this province. This province extends between the solid mass from Majella in the west, the Adriatic coast in the east, the Province of Pescara in north and the area of the Molise in the south. Majella is the greatest mountainous group of the province of Chieti (it culminates with Assembles Amaro, 2795 meters). The Eastern slope of Majella, contrary to the Western slope which goes down gently towards the conch from Sulmona by a regular slope, is characterized by deep wild and inaccessible small valleys by the road. The most impressive small valley is that which dominates the village Fara San Martino (which produces the famous Delverde pastes and De Cecco); length of several km, one can reach it foot only by the bottom of the throats of the torrent, broad of only a few meters. The biodiversity is incredibly not disturbed there by the human activity, which forever exploited the dark forests of the small valley and which are attended by rare hikers. In the south of the province, with horse with Weakens, draw up small mountains, Monti dei Frentani (the name comes from the former people which lived the south of the province of Chieti at the time Roman). Of modest altitude (they do not join the 1500 meters in the Abruzzi and the 2000 meters in Weakens) and strongly exploited for agriculture, this small solid mass has a jewel: the cascade of Rio Verde, one of largest of the Abruzzi, beside an intact forest of fir trees autochtones (rare in the remainder of the Apennines). A good part of the territory is covered with clay hills cultivated with scrap-metals. Contrary to the remainder of the area and a good part of the Adriatic coast, the coast of the province of Chieti is characterized especially by cliffs and rocks (between San vito Chietino and Vasto). The most impressive cliff is that of Punta Penne (which forms a point on the coast if one looks at a chart). Here the coast was well preserved, and a national park recently was born (creation there: February 2007). From a hydrographic point of view, the principal river of the province is Sangro (117 km), of which only the low part of its course crosses the province. Its principal affluent is Avellino, which is born on the majella. In north, the province of chieti is separated from the province of Pescara by the Pescara river; in the south, the province is separated from Weakens by the river Trigno (80 km), which is born on the slope from Weakens of Monti dei Frentani.
