Castellón or Castelló is one of the 50 provinces of the Spain, and is in the north of the Région of Valence. It has a population of: 543432 inhabitants and his capital is Castellón of Plana (: 167455 inhabitants).

Its east coast named Costa del Azahar (" azahar" being a Spanish name of Arab origin which wants to say " flower of oranger").

History

Since VIIIe century until the first third of XIIIe, the province was with the hands of the Moslems. Jacques Ier the Conqueror conquered it at the expense of the Arab kings of Valence and incorporated it in the Kingdom of Aragon. The first conquest was Morella in 1232, then the following year fell Peñiscola and Castellón of Plana. During the wars Carlistes, the area of Maestrazgo (in north) was a hearth reactionary whereas the capital was the fulcrum of the armies of Isabelle.

Population

The population density of the province of Castellón is of 81,36 hab/km ², slightly lower than the Spanish average (87,41 hab/km ²) and weakest of the three provinces of the Valencian Communauté.

The population is distributed in a very unequal way: the great majority is in Castellón of Plana (30,81% of the provincial population) and in the close localities (Almazora, Benicassim, Villarreal…), i.e., in the south-eastern quarter of the province. The littoral fringe of the north of Castellón also presents important concentrations of population (Vinaroz, Benicarló). On the other hand, the interior, mountainous is practically depopulated, with population densities lower than 20 hab/km ².

According to the INNATE census of 2005,11,97% of the provincial population of foreign nationality was, with three points and half with the top of the national average. The most groups are of Rumanian origin (29.021 listed, is 44,21% of the total from abroad), Moroccan (10.344, 15,76%) and Colombian (3.849, 5,87%).
