Province of Awa (Chiba)

Awa (安房国; Awa No kuni ) was an old province of the Japan which occupied part of current the Préfecture of Chiba. It belonged to the fifteen provinces crossed by the road of the Tōkaidō.

Geography

The province was bordered by the Province of Kazusa, and was held at the end of the Péninsule of Bōsō (房総半島) which draws its first Kanji of the name from the province of Awa and its second of the name of province of Kazusa.

Districts

The province was made up of 4 districts:
  • Asai
  • Awa
  • Heguri
  • Nagasa
The capital was in the district of Heguri. The site was not discovered but it is supposed that the city was to be close to the current city of Miyoshi.

History

The province is resulting from division into two of the province of Kazusa in 718. During the time Azuchi Momoyama and the Period Sengoku, the province was held by the Clan Satomi.
