Province of Antofagasta

The Provincia de Antofagasta is in the second area of the country, the Región de Antofagasta with the Chile.

Antofagasta

The commune of Antofagasta, city and commune, is capital of area and province and had a population of 295.792 inhabitants in (2002) . It is located in edge of the Pacifique. It is surrounded in north by the commune of Mejillones, in the east by the commune of Gorda Sierra and in the south by the commune of Taltal.

Mejillones

The commune of Mejillones is surrounded in north by the commune of Tocopilla, in the west by the ocean Pacifique, in the east by the commune of Gorda Sierra and in the south by the commune of Antofagasta. Its population in (2002) was of 8.418 inhabitants, to 90% urban.

Gorda sierra

The commune of Gorda Sierra is located on the central high plateau, in full desert of Atacama. This commune is surrounded in the west by the communes of Mejillones and Antofagasta, in the east by the commune of Calama. Its rural population at 100% was in (2002) of 2.356 inhabitants.

Taltal

The southernmost commune of the province and the area. It is surrounded in the west by the ocean Pacifique, in north and the east by the commune of Antofagasta. Its population was in (2002) of 11.100 inhabitants.
