History
Proton was born from the political will of the Prime Minister Mahatir bin Mohammed to equip Malaysia with a car manufacturer and to lock the national automobile market. The nationalism of the Prime Minister was also in the logo of the mark, which reproduced the flag malaysien (since, the logo is more " commercial").
It was launched thanks to the support of foreign manufacturers, the first of which Mitsubishi Motors. The Japanese constructor, in addition to a capital intensive participation of 16%, provided the manufactoring process, the models (identical to his), as well as the engines. In the years 1990, Proton produced the Citroen AX under its own effigy.
This political control is always present in the distribution of the capital. In addition to Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the financial and industrial holding public (equivalent of the Deposit and consignment office in France), which holds 31,63% of them, one counts several Malaysian companies, themselves public companies or semi-public, following the example tanker Petronas which has 6,50% of them.
Today badly in point financially and commercially, it object of several rumors of redemption or partnerships by General Motors, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroen.
