The proto-océanien (in summary POc ; in English Proto Oceanic ) is a language that the linguists specialists in comparative literature - after, in particular, of Otto Dempwolff - propose to rebuild like probable the common ancestor of the group of the Langues océaniennes. It is a Langue austronésienne, which goes down, for this reason, of the Proto-austronésien (SIDE), the common ancestor of all the Langues austronésiennes.

The proto-océanien would have been spoken some 4200 years ago, in the Archipel Bismarck, in the east of the New Guinea New Guinea. The archeologists and the linguists agree today to consider that this population coincides more or less with that which developed and diffused the Civilization Lapita.

Linguistic characteristics

The techniques of compared Linguistique, as well as the relative homogeneity of the languages océaniennes, make it possible to reconstitute with enough precision the linguistic main features of their common ancestor, the proto-océanien - and this, even if the details of the rebuilding still make the subject of debate among the specialists. Like any scientific assumption, it goes without saying that these rebuildings reflect the state of science at one time given (as the asterisks indicate it *, of use in front of all protoforme).

Phonology

The phonology of POc can be rebuilt with sufficient precision. The proto-océanien had 5 vowels: * I , * E , * has , * O , * U , without opposition length. It also had 23 consonants, rebuilt as follows:
