Protests coeds in Iran of July 1999

The Protests coeds in Iran of July 1999 (known under the name of " 18 Tir" Shooting '' in Iran) belong to the most violent protests in Iran after the advent of the Islamic Republic.

The protests began the July 9th 1999 (18 Shooting of the year 1378 of the Persan Calendrier), after a demonstration against the closing of the Persan newspaper Salaam . The protests then took place in the dormitories of the students of the Université of Teheran during the night; protests which were repressed very hard by the Basidj as a civilian and of the militants of the group Ansar Al-Hezbollah. Several fanatics and of the police officers pursued the students until in the dormitories, causing damage at the same time on the demonstrators and the buildings. Riots continued in the street during almost a week, giving place to many arrests and wounds, causing even the death of a student, Ezzat Ebrahim Nejad (only confirmed death). However, the major student movements and the foreign mediums counted 17 died during the week of protests. Other Iranian big cities like Tabriz, Mashhad, Shiraz and Esfahan also knew scenes of violence.

The protests then continued at the University of Tabriz on July 11th, 1999 (20 Shooting) and organizes it and of the fanatics made the same thing with the students of Tabriz as to those of Teheran; they entered the university (to Iran, the armed forces are not legally authorized to penetrate in the universities), and maltreated students, by killing at least two.
