Functions
Its first vocation is to contribute to the bringing together of these Churches and these associations, to coordinate their action, to help them to assume their responsibilities. She undertakes also actions under organization representing French Protestantism, these actions aim to:
- To maintain the relationships to the public authorities and the media, public communication in all the fields where Protestantism believes duty to bear particular witness and a message which is clean for him and which it wishes to make hear in the public debate.
- To defend the religious liberties, in France and in the world.
- To support the oecumenical relations with the other Churches and Protestant associations (non-member of the FPF), and to encourage the common relations and initiatives with the nonProtestant Christian Churches.
- Research and biblical study.
Organization
The FPF defined a charter that all the Churches and associations members are committed respecting. It appears there a certain number of convictions based on the Évangile of which, in particular, recognition as central of the advertisement of the hello by the grace. However, each Church and of associations members of the FPF preserves his freedom on its specificities and its identity, as well theological as practical. The Churches preserve their own denominational membership and the operation ecclesiologic to which they are attached. For example, they do not have all the same design of the Baptême nor the same modes of organization connected with the church.
The council of the FPF is composed of 25 people (19 men and 6 women). He meets 4 times per annum. He is chaired by Pasteur Claude Baty, of the free evangelic Churches, since 2007.
Recently, she was opposed to the catholic doctrines of Subsistit in.
History
One can see two big factors with the creation of the Protestant federation of France:- great division reigning within the protestantime at the beginning of the 20th century. Cruelly felt by some, it caused, in reaction, a need for bringing together.
- bill of separation of the Church and the State (Law 1905), whose Protestants feel forgotten since they were not consulted, imposes the need for organizing themselves to speak with one voice vis-a-vis the government.
The October 25th 1905 resulting from the will of five Churches, the FPF is made up in its great principles. In 1907, the first council of the federation meets. It is in 1909 that in Nimes the first General meeting takes place itself of Protestantism.
Progressively of its evolution, other Churches join the FPF:
- the Federation Baptist (1916)
- the apostolic Church (1972)
- the evangelic Mission gypsy (1975)
- the Church of God, the Union of the Churches of Alarm clock, as well as the Union of the Churches Évangéliques Libres which had been founder, then had left the Federation (1983)
- the Salvation Army (1995)
- the evangelic Churches of Nazaréen (2003)
- various other Churches with Pentecost and the adventist Federations of France (2006)
Since 1962, the Federation accommodates, in addition to the Churches and on the same basis, Protestant associations, communities, institutions, works or movements such as the Cimade, the Protestant Entraide, EEUdF (Éclaireuses and unionistic scouts of France, etc)
In 2005 the FPF celebrates its 100 years at the time of various events from October 21st to 23rd.
