Protective Company of the animals
The protective Société of the animals (S.P.A.) is a dedicated association, as its name indicates it, with protection animals. Its principal means of action are logistic (refuges of animals) and legal (approximately 700 complaints to fight cruelty towards the animals per annum). They are 1100 deputy voluntary investigators who work all the year in bond with four permanent inspectors and the legal direction of the SPA in order to prosecute the suspectées people of ill treatment towards the animals.
The S.P.A. east creates the December 2nd 1845 by the doctor Etienne Pariset who will be the first president, until his death the July 3rd 1847. It is recognized of public utility in 1860.
One often wrongly allots the paternity of the S.P.A. to the general Jacques de Grammont who was announced by a bill in 1849. The law was voted in 1850.
In addition, 250 associations independent gathered within the National confederation of the S.P.A. of France (CNSPA) created in 1926, also work for the protection of the animals. The role of the refuges, distributed on all the French territory and the DOM-TOM, is to accommodate the abandoned animals and to make them adopt while the Confederation acts at the national level to sensitize the public with the problem of the abandonment and to make hear the voice of the small structures near the institutions.
About the denomination “Protective Company of the Animals”, it should be known that:
- there does not exist only one and single SPA;
- the majority of refuges SPA are independent and have their own management.
