Protected geographical ascription
The Protected Geographical ascription (IGP) makes it possible to defend the geographical names and is a manner of determining the origin of a product.
A European label
The IGP is a European identification mark, created in 1992. Allotted to the specific products bearing a name geographical and dependant on their geographic origin, the IGP allows the protection of those in all the European Union.

“The name of an area, a given place or, in exceptional cases, of a country, which are used to indicate an agricultural produce or a foodstuff:- originating in this area, this given place or this country, et
- of which a determined quality, reputation or other characteristics can be allotted to this origin geographical, et
- of which production and/or the transformation and/or the development take place in the delimited geographical surface. ”
Characteristics of the IGP, in France
- From the January 1st, 2007, an IGP is not necessarily any more coupled with a Red Label or a Certification of Conformity Produced (CPC).
- the management of the IGP is ensured by the National institute of the Origin and of Quality (INAO)
- It has as a target: groupings (producing, transformer…) interested by the protection of a specific product bearing a geographical name.
