In Physiology, the proprioception indicates the capacity of the human Cerveau at any moment to know the position of the body in space.

“Says feelings resulting from the body which informs about the attitude, the movements, balance”.

What means that the setting in motion of nervous terminations or “receivers” will immediately transform any stimulation into message usable.

There are two kinds of ways:

Unconscious ways of proprioception

They are projected on the level of the cerebellum and intervene in the control of the posture. Their afférences not arriving at the cortex, they remain unconscious. They contain two spino-cérebelleux beams:
  • direct beam (posterior) which gains the Cervelet by the lower stalk and conveys the afférences coming from the trunk.
  • cross beam (former) which gains the cerebellum by higher cérebelleux stalk and vehicle afférences coming from the members.
The two beams have a first relay spinal. They are distinguished from the conscious ways projecting itself on the primary cortex somesthesic, which enables us to be aware of the position of our body in space.

Direct ways of proprioception

These ways, being projected on the primary cortex somesthesic and which enables us to be conscious of the position of our body in space, are distinguished from the ways of the unconscious proprioception. These muscular and articular afférences borrow, like the afférences of tact fine, epicritic or discriminatif, the ways of the dorsal columns and the lemnisque median to join, after a first bulbar relay, the thalamus then after this relay thalamic, that of the primary cortex somesthesic.
