chapter The chapter is an assembly of clerks called Chanoine S. This community of canons is directed by a Doyen.
Under the Old Mode, one could count approximately 600 chapters in France (including approximately 120 cathédraux chapters), largely concentrated in South-east.
That it is cathédral or collegial, the chapter is charged to make the worship solemn within its Cathédrale or of its church. The canons are in particular responsible to recite the masses daily for the rest of deaths. These masses, which were financed by the family of late and which was indexed in the book of deaths, made it possible the chapter to obtain complementary incomes. The chapter was also charged to manage the businesses and the inheritance accumulated since the creation of the congregation. The canon responsible for the management of the tangible properties of the chapter was called treasurer. The canons met in chapter in the Chapter house in order to discuss, to discuss and make the decisions which relate to the community.
Some of them could be very rich by their inheritance and their incomes, primarily in the North of France.
