Professor of the schools is a body of the French Public office obtained by contest, qualifying teachers having for mission of working with the children provided education for with the elementary school, that it is at the maternal school or the elementary school .

This body was created by the law of orientation on education n°89-486 of July 10th, 1989, with the opening (creation) of IUFM as of on September 1st, 1990. It replaces that of the teachers. The latter have, if they wish it, the possibility of becoming professors of the schools by the means of an internal competition or specific promotions.

The professors of the schools can also teach:

  • near children sometimes older (12 to 14 years), in difficulty, within SEGPA (Sections of mainstream education and adapted professional), sections specific in some colleges) or EREA (regional Establishments of adapted teaching) similar to the SEGPA but in particular comprising a boarding school,
  • within RASED, network of assistances specialized with the problem childs,
  • in CLIS, class of school integration (children from 6 to 12 years),
  • in IME, médico-educational Institut (children from 6 to 18 years),
  • in UPI , Teaching Unit of integration (children from 11 to 14 years),
  • in IMPRO, médico-educational Institut professionnalisant (children up to 20 years),
  • in ITEP, educational and teaching therapeutic Institut (children from 7 to 16 years),
  • in Center of outdoor, accessible over a limited time of the pupils in situation of rupture with the education system.

Obligations and responsibilities

The obligations to which the professors of the schools are held are appreciably the same ones as those of the whole of the civils servant (to have of reserve, respect of the hierarchy, etc), to which the obligations of teaching fixed in particular by the law of orientation are added and in the school programs.

The responsibilities are very important: during school time, arrival of the child at the school until his departure, these teachers are personally and penally persons in charge. The Principal , a teacher among those of the school, is moreover responsible for the organization of the service of the other teachers and the personnel assigned to the school (in particular, of the municipal personnel).

Contest of access

The recruitment of the professors of the schools is carried out by contest (CRPE). The prizes winner are affected in the academy in which they were allowed with the contest. They teach in one of the departments of this academy after establishment (from where the importance of the choice of the academy at the time of the inscription to the contest). This contest requires beforehand obtaining a license (except specific exemptions or professional situations). It can be prepared in a IUFM (this first year of preparation is called then the PE1).

Several contests make it possible to become professor of the schools (external, internal, third way, etc).

After the contest, they follow one year of professional training in a IUFM (Academic institute of training of the Masters) and training courses in schools. Among these training courses, one can dissociate the Training courses of Practice Accompanied (or SPA) by the Training courses of Responsibility (or SR). The SPA are training courses accompanied by formative Masters during which the PE2 go in the classes. Initially, they do nothing but observe, but have to prepare one or two meetings and to implement them in the presence of the teacher of the class. The SR are training courses of approximately three weeks during which the PE2 are only full-time in a class.

Note: the operation of each IUFM can differ slightly.

The last by order of classification (which are thus not received) are registered on a list known as “complementary”. The academy can propose to them, according to its own needs, to become professors of the schools on the condition of agreeing to ensure one year of teaching before the year known as of PE2. The number of candidates concerned accounts for on average 10 to 30% of the receipts each year. At the conclusion of this first year of teaching, they join the traditional course, with one year of training (the PE2).

The year of training gives place to an evaluation relating at the same time to the training courses, the professional report and the lesson followed in IUFM. This evaluation conditions the delivery of the DPPE, Professional Diplôme of Professor of the Schools, then their establishment (statutory civil servant).

Remuneration

Wages

The body of professor of the schools comprises two ranks which correspond to different remunerations: the professors of the schools of normal class , and the professors of the schools except class .

The career of teaching proceeds, punctuated every three years on average of the visit of their direct hierarchical person in charge, the Inspecteur of State education of the district (or IEN). The purpose of this one is to evaluate the work carried out in class and to note the professor. This note conditions in particular the speed of progression in the scale of remunerations.

Remuneration begins with 1.310 € Nets per month the first year and increases: of 1.753 € with 1.859 € at the end of 10 years, of 2.298 € with 2.471 € at the end of 20 years and up to 2.471 € Nets per month at the end of 30 years of service (2 931 € Nets for the professors having been named “except class”). These wages are given except family supplement and local allowance (source Minister of education main road, update 2007). Moreover, the professors of the schools exerting the function of principal touch an allowance of 91 € Nets monthly magazine.

Organization within the school

Under normal functioning, each professor of the schools is known as “assistant” within the school, except for the professor having accepted the load of direction (called principal). This last does not have any hierarchical relation with the other professors, but ensures in particular the administrative responsibility and manages the operation of the school with the assistance of the other teachers and the personnel which can possibly be present (generally of the personnel delegated by the town hall of the commune).

The professors assume the entirety of the lesson is on average 26 H of presence in class per week for which it is advisable to add:

  • hours of obligatory presence to the various meetings (of which councils of school),
  • hours of obligatory formation,
  • hours of preparation and corrections of the work carried out by the children.
Either a total of more than 160 h/mois (or 36 h/semaine) over 36 weeks, which roughly corresponds to work 25 h/semaine over one year complete.

  • the participation in the nonobligatory meetings,
  • various meetings with the parents,
  • the follow-up of the pupils in very great difficulty or handicapped,
