Professor Tournesol
See also: Sunflower (homonymy)
Tryphon Sunflower , usually called the Professor Tournesol , is one of the main characters of the Aventures of Tintin .
Presentation
It joined Tintin, Milou and the Capitaine Haddock starting from the album the Treasury of Rackham the Red , where it builds for them a prototype of exploring Sous-marin in form of Requin, with an aim of finding the treasure sought since the Secrecy of the Unicorn .In Objective the Moon , it builds in Syldavie a lunar rocket with atomic Moteur with which it leaves accompanied by Tintin and his friends on the the Moon in One walked on the Moon . In Objectif the Moon it pricks one of most beautiful angers of the history of the cartoon, where it is discovered that to treat it of zouave is one of the worst insults than one can make him.
In the album the Temple of the Sun , his/her friends seek it after it was removed by downward people of the Incas, to have made what they estimate to be a sacrilege… In the Business Sunflower , it is successively removed by the Syldaves and the Bordures, interested by its last invention which uses the Ultra-son S as arms with destruction… at least for the Verre and the Porcelaine first.
Sunflower is very hard of the ear, and hears usually only the last letters of the sentences that one says to him. It is source of many surrealist dialogs, in particular with the Capitaine Haddock. In Objective the Moon and One went on the Moon , Tournesol acquires an apparatus accoustic which gives him a normal hearing in order to conclude the lunar mission.
Curiously, without a reason not being given, it will not carry any more this apparatus thereafter, and will become again naturally hard of ear. One can explain that by two reasons:
- Hergé perhaps estimated that the bad hearing of Sunflower still had a good comic potential (cf misunderstandings which it starts in the Jewels of Castafiore ) and which it would be a shame not to benefit from it;
- It is necessary to keep in mind that the album of Tintin which follows immediately One went on the Moon is the Business Sunflower , in which the bad hearing of the professor is one of the element-engines of the scenario (because of her, he does not hear the ringing of the telephone when Tintin and Haddock invite it to say to him that he is in danger, and is thus made remove); Hergé could need in this album, for scenaristic reasons, on a deaf Sunflower, and would have decided, by preoccupation with a coherence, to present it with the same problems of hearing in the following albums.
Inspiration
The character of professor Tournesol is a transposition of the Swiss physicist Auguste Piccard, explorer of the upper atmosphere and great depths, inventor of the Bathyscaphe, and first of a line of savanturiers . By his use of the Pendulum, all the same unusual at a scientist, Tournesol recalls also the professor Yves Rocard of the Collège de France. Let us note that it is also once called professor Tournedos by Bianca Castafiore which takes it for a celebrates sporting which made splendid rises in balloon .
