Meximieux is a common Frenchwoman, chief town of canton of the Ain. Its inhabitants are called Meximiards.

Geography

At 35 km in the North-East of Lyon and at approximately 14 km of Ambérieu-in-Bugey, the locality is located on the relief of the Côtière which marks the end of the plate of the Dombes, at the contact with the plain of Ain. From a historical point of view, it belongs to the old province of Bresse. Its situation a long time conferred a role of relay to him on the roads active of Lyon towards Geneva and the borders German or alpine. Méximieux is also located at 14km of Lagnieu.

The population, in 2003 was estimated at 6.918 inhabitants ( Meximiards ) (agglomeration 8  767, including Pérouges in particular) This famous medieval borough is perched on one of the tops of coastal bordering the plate of the Dombes and dominating the alluvial plains of the the Rhone and the Ain.

Administration

The Canton of Meximieux belongs to the district of Borough-in-Bresse. Its total population is of 17  275 inhabitants.

Meximieux is twinned at the German city of Denkendorf, in the Land of Bade-Wurtemberg since 1986.

History

Meximieux is noted since Antiquity. It draws its name from the owner of a Gallo-Roman farm : “Maximiacus”.

Fatherland of Vaugelas.

The construction of highway 42 facilitated the access to Lyon. Meximieux passed from the statute of rural small town to that of suburban commune. The population was multiplied by three in thirty years.
