Producer of cinema

The Producteur of cinema is the person who finances or who coordinates the financings of a film and which controls the expenditure compared to the budget. But its role is not confined has these functions: it must normally also help the realizer at the time of the writing of the scenario, the choice of the actors, the places of turning, the team and will be the interlocutor privileged in the event of problems or conflicts. It thus has also an artistic role and not only of patronage. The producer does not put normally equities: he manages the money of third people. On the other hand, it, or its company, is the person in charge in the event of financial losses before the banks and other organizations him having prété the money requested.
“The producer of L `audio-visual work is the natural person or morals who takes the initiative and the responsability for the realization of work. ” Code of the intellectual property (art.132-23)
The producer “takes personally or shares the initiative jointly and the financial, technical and artistic responsibility for the realization of work and guarantees the good end of it. ” Decree n°2001-609 of July 9th, 2001 (art.II-I-4°)
The producer can be the building owner (financial responsibility) and/or the project superintendent (artistic responsibility). Its principal tasks are:
- to control the design of the project;
- studied feasibility of it;
- to design the financial montage, by seeking financings (partners, assistances,…) ;
- to implement the resources creative, human, financial and technical necessary to its manufacture;
- to establish and make respect the diary of manufacture.
These missions are very often consequently assured moral person.
The producing word indicates very different functions according to the countries but also according to the category of producer (Associate producer or Executive producer). A producer seldom only works, except on modest productions in terms of budget.
Schematically, one can oppose the American producer to the European producer. The first works for a studio (or Major of cinema), i.e. a large company of production being based on the banks and other financial institutions. The second works for a small structure and very often counts on the assistances of various organizations.
In the United States
- Executive producer (Attention with the false-friends, it is the Anglo-Saxon ) : He is engaged within the framework of a particular film. It is charged to constitute the team and to engage the assistants. On films with small budgets, the associate producer can only undertake this mission without engaging of executive producer. He is an employee of the studio, he does not put equities in the project and is the bond between the studio and film.
- Associate producer (the Anglo-Saxon .) : It is the legal and financial person in charge film, in particular with respect to the other investors. It receives the money, redistributes it and commits themselves to finish films and following their career. It can intervene on the spirit of the project and its artistic aspect, on the scenario and casting for example.
- Producing associated: intervenes at the end of the turning, when funds are necessary to finish film and that all was spent.
In Europe
Here some examples of organizations to which a European producer can appeal to find financings.
For example the CNC (National center of cinematography), television channels hertzian or by subscription like Canal+, TPS, the Foundation GAN, SOFICA, regional aids, or the PROCIREP. But also assistances of the French and foreign production companies, etc .
