Prodromoi

The prodromoi (of the old Greek πρόδρομοι / pródromoi ) is the scouts of the army of Alexandre Large the in his forwarding in Asia.

The sources ( Anabase of Arrien primarily) mention the existence of four squadrons of light cavalry acting as scouts and riflemen: they are 900 riders which pass to Asia under the command of Cassandre at the beginning of the war (Diodore of Sicily XVII, 17,4), and which could be of origin Thrace and péonienne. The identification between the troops mentioned by Arrien and Diodore is not however entirely some.

The prodromoi carry a helmet (Phrygian then philistine) as only defensive weapon, and are armed with the xyston under Philippe II, then of sarisse under Alexandre. They are not mentioned any more after 330 av. J. - C., date from which one perhaps finds them under the two units of hippacontistai (assembled launchers of javelin) and of sarisophoroi hippeis (riding carriers of sarisse), whose functions correspond well to that one allots before to the prodromoi .

Historiography (Bosworth 1980, Hammond 2001) tends to show that they are also Macedonians. Perhaps they correspond to units of first assignment of the young Macedonians, before being later versed in the heavy cavalry of the hétairoi .
