The Procyon Storr, 1780 gathers the raccoons in the broad sense. These species are originating in America. The common raccoon ( P. lotor ) was introduced in Europe by the human ones.

The kind is composed of the S following:

  • Procyon cancrivorus (G. Vat, 1798) - Little rat crabier.
  • Procyon gloveralleni Nelson and Goldman, 1930 - Raccoon of Barbados (extinct)
  • Procyon insularis Merriam, 1898 - Raccoon of Very Married
  • Procyon lotor (Linnaeus, 1758) - common Raccoon
  • Procyon maynardi Bangs, 1898
  • Procyon minor Miller, 1911 - Raccoon of the Guadeloupe
  • Procyon pygmaeus Merriam, 1901

The statute of certain species is currently discussed: P. gloveralleni , P. maynardi , P. minor and P. pygmaeus could be only subspecies of the common raccoon.

The raccoon of the islands mow Tres MarĂ­as (Mexico) is registered on the red Liste of the UICN (IN).
