The foundation Pro Juventute (Latin: for youth) was created in 1912 by the Swiss Company of public utility with an aim of fighting the Tuberculose in the children and the young people. Social work of private nature, it proposes to encourage the efforts which tend to the good of Swiss youth in the fields of the assistance, the prevention, the protection of the mother and the family.
She is organized in 191 districts and is pressed on 8.000 voluntary collaborators who propose an direct aid and launch or support projects in the fields of education, training, health, sociocultural animation and the leisures.
Since 2001, it organizes every two years a film festival under the name of Ado' visions . The next edition will take place in 2007 with Martigny.
It publishes the review Early childhood , a quarterly publication addressing itself to any person engaged in education and the guard of the children.
It published the Almanach Pestalozzi , a diary of pocket intended to inform school youth.
It is at the origin of the places of play Robinson of which first was arranged in Zurich-Wipkingen in 1957.
During years 1980, Pro Juventute was the object of a polemic in connection with the countryside “Kinder der Landstrasse” with which the Foundation was associated. More than 600 children gypsies to the load of the authorities had been separated from their parents, sent in the specialized establishments, or collected by parents of adoption. Travelling entertainers, their parents were a priori regarded as incompetents to raise them. Many of these children never re-examined their close relations. Pro Juventute submitted his excuses to the community gypsy.
The foundation Pro Juventute finances itself more than 95% of its activities by the sale of articles (in particular the sale, by the schools and La Poste, of postage stamps with surtax of benevolence), by gifts and legacies and performances of service. It is not given any public subsidizing.
On mandate of the Confederation, it set up and manages the phone line of assistance to the children and the young people who functions under the call number 147 .
The seat is with Zurich, the French secretariat with Lausanne.
