Pro-life

The expression pro-life , or provie , refers to the people and to associations, partly believing, defending the “Droit to the life”, through the defense of the child to be born, the handicapped child to be born, and the opposition to any form of Euthanasie and human Clonage. They are thus opposed to the organizations known as Pro-choice , which defend the right to the Avortement. One employs also sometimes the name of origin states-unienne pro-life , which means pro-life .

In the United States

With the the United States, certain extremists anti-abortions made the choice prevent the action of the doctors practitioner the abortion by violent actions, in particular by posing bombs in the centers of abortion during the years 1990. These extreme cases remain marginal, but actions much more current are the “anti-IVG commandos”.

The term “pro-life” is not defined above all in opposition to a specific right, but includes a whole philosophy of the life and world. A philosophy which wants to recognize with each human life an equal and irreducible value, from its nature even, independently of any consideration external, and infinitely higher than any external consideration (than it is of a nature physical, biological, psychological, mental, racial, moral, religious…).

Supported and encouraged by certain groups fundamentalist Protestants and condemned by the Catholic church only in its methods , philosophy “pro-life” is also by politicized movements, particularly of right-hand side or extreme right-hand side.

In France

The first movement of the type “provie”, Leave-the-food-S.O.S future mothers, was founded in 1971. It was one of principal the contradictor in the favor campaign of the abortion legalized at the beginning of the Seventies.

The movement pro-life, partly inspired of that American, knew a certain revival with beginning of the year 90: to mitigate a cruel deficit of image, movements such that Doctor Dor organized gatherings of prayers in front of the centers of abortion, or the such Truce of God organized anti-IVG “operations rescues” or “commando”. With the difference in the American movement, this type of action degenerated forever towards physical violence, but the organization prochoix denounced the psychological violence of these movements.

With the reinforcement of the legislative arsenal in favor of the IVG by the Neïertz laws of 1993 then Aubry of 2001, this type of action disappeared to leave room to more traditional actions of lobbying. Thus “national Walk for the life”, organized by the Collectif 30 years that is enough has the role since 2005 to gather each year the movement pro-life at the time of a demonstration in Paris, in January. From 2005 also, the Life Parades, more festive movement, organized on the model of the techno-parade, is organized every year with Paris. It is chaired by Arnaud Brenier. Association also launched a petition against the Homoparentalité.

With time the movement provie widened its sphere of activity: whereas until in the years 2000, the speech related only to the abortion, it defends today more generally a “right to the life”: always fight against the Abortion, but in a bearing speech on the “right to be born”, fight against the Euthanasia with “a right to live its life until its natural end” and the promotion of the palliative Care, fight against the concept of Homoparentalité, with “a right for the child to have a father and a mother”, etc

The term “pro-life” can surprise when one reads the result of the investigation of Fiammette Venner on the opinion of 203 militants “pro-life” on the capital punishment: “ 70% is very favorable there, rather favorable 24% and rather unfavourable 5% ”. However, the conditions of realization of the investigation (targeted sendings of questionnaires, voluntary answers, 80% of no return) make it prone to guarantee. More rigorous surveys carried out in the USA however confirm this tendency in the pro-life on the other side of the Atlantic.

In Canada

Several Canadian political movements have the role of putting an end to the abortion.
  • the Left Christian Democrat Quebec

  • the Countryside Quebec-Life
  • the Coalition of the families of Ontario
  • the Left the Christian heritage Canada
  • the Left reformist Canada, annexed with the conservative party
  • the Walk for the life

These groups denounce the fact that the State subsidizes to 100% the abortions in Quebec and the fact that the abortion would be even more accessible than the contraceptive pill.

Moreover, according to the chief Christian-Democrat Gilles Christmas, there would be a significant fraction of the members of the democratic Action of Quebec and Conservative party of Canada which would be opposed to the abortion.

The Holy See

During the second world war, the Church was opposed to the Eugénisme practiced on the patients, the poor and the ethnic minorities in the Protestant countries, of which Germany.

Paul VI was a model for the militants pro-life because of his encyclical Humanae Vitae, which considers that contraception, the abortion and the euthanasia are all of the phenomena connected.

Jean-Paul II wrote Evangelium vitæ, where he denounced the culture of dead and a culture of life opposed to it. The Vatican also made the promotion of the Bioéthique and the natural Planification.

Mère Theresa believed that the prayer could put an end to the abortion and had privileged the eucharistic Adoration to fight in favor of the life.
