The Private school of political sciences , known as familiarly “Sciences Po”, was an private establishment of higher education created in 1872 by Emile Boutmy. It is the ancestor of the Institut of political studies of Paris and of the national Fondation of political sciences, which as a unit are always called Sciences Po.
Origins
Between 1870 and 1872 occur in France of serious political disturbances, which what is called cause the “German crisis of the French thought”: the demolished vis-a-vis the Germany, the fall of the Second Empire and events of the Common of Paris. By being registered effort of republican renewal of the Years 1870 and in order to reform the formation of the elites of France to give a new departure to the country, Emile Boutmy, surrounded by a group of scientists (like Hippolyte Taine, Ernest Renan, Albert Sorel, Paul Leroy-Beaulieu or Rene Stourm) and of industrialists, creates in February 1872 the Private school of political sciences. The first year, quatre-vingt-neuf pupils is registered.Several teaching innovations characterize the teaching of the school:
- the intervention, very early, experts of the policy beside the recognized academics, with ministers, senior officials, members of the Council of State, etc
- very early co-operation with foreign universities.
- the important place granted to the study of the contemporary companies.
- obligatory physical education.
In 1879, the School settles with the hotel of Mortemart, Rue Saint-Guillaume with Paris.
Influence
The School contributes to the appearance of the Political science as a discipline and keeps with it a quasi-monopoly until the Second world war.
Nationalization of 1945
It is nationalized and integrated into the Université of Paris the October 9th 1945 under the name of Institut of political studies of the University of Paris; the same day, an ordinance creates the national Fondation of political sciences (FNSP), which receives the inheritance and the administrative management and financial of the IEP.-
