Pristidae

The sawfishes or Pristidae form a family Poisson S of the class of the chondrichthyens, i.e. they have a skeleton of the cartilagineux type, like the Requin S and the Raie S. They belong to the order of the Pristiformes, word which draws its origin from the Greek “ pristis ”, which wants to say “saw”.

Physical characteristics

The sawfishes are characterized mainly by the osseous prolongation of their Museau, called Rostre, which measures up to two meters and comprises a score of two centimetres long teeth, which gives them the appearance of a saw. In all, the body can measure of one to seven meters, according to the species.

There exist seven S of sawfishes, which live in the tropical or subtropical areas, in fresh water or salt water, according to the species.

Predatory and food

Apart from the man, the sawfishes predatory knew few. They nourish Poisson S, of Crustacés, Towards, bivalvular S and vegetable.
