Prison of State de San Quentin
San Quentin is a prison of State located on 1,7 km ² (432 acres) on the point Quentin located at the north of San Francisco, in the Comté of Sailor, in California (the United States).
The prison was open in July 1852, which makes of it the oldest prison of California. It was built by the prisoners who were placed on the Waban ship during the construction of the prison. San Quentin sheltered male and female prisoners until in 1933, date from which the prison of the women of Tehachapi was built.
The district of condemned to masculines death of the State is located at San Quentin, which shelters the only gas chamber of California. These last years, however, the gas chamber was employed to carry out the lethal injections.
The February 24th 1969, Johnny Cash played there in front of prisoners. The concert was recorded on disc and was filmed by the television channel Granada TV.
He was imitated in 2003 by Metallica, which also recorded there the video clip of “St Anger”.
It is in 1941 in San Quentin that the first meeting of the Alcoholics anonymouses took place. In order to commemorate the event, the 25-millionth copy of the Grand book of the organization was presented by Jill Brown, of San Quentin, with the international convention of the Alcoholics anonymouses of Toronto, in Ontario (Canada).
