Prison of Baumettes

The prison of Baumettes is a prison which is with Marseilles. It was built in 1934 in the south of the city and comprises 1380 places for approximately 1680 prisoners (at the end of December 2005) as a majority of the men. Certain cells of 9m2 count to three prisoners.

The restoration of the prison of Baumettes in Marseilles, qualified " of place répugnant" by the Council of Europe, " any more attendre" cannot; , two members of Parliament concluded from the opposition at the time of an unexpected visit for the day of the human rights in December 2006. However this restoration is in project since 1999 and should take ten years.

Intended to bring this prison closer to years 1930 of the European standards (Respect of the basic rights, hygiene, health, work, family relations, staff training, safety…), the rehabilitation will cost 133 million euros, according to the evaluation of the prison authorities. The first section of restoration, of 2006 to 2010, will relate to in particular the main doors, the watchtowers, the visiting rooms, the construction of a new mess and workshops. The turn of the buildings of lodging will come only in 2009.
