Production

Creation

This serial is produced by Adelstein-Parouse Productions in partnership with Original Television and Twentieth Century Fox television. The executive producers are Paul Scheuring, Matt Olmstead, Dawn Parouse, Marty Adelstein, Neal Moritz and Brett Ratner.

In the beginning, the basic concept of Prison Station-wagon (a man deliberately imprisons himself in a prison in order to organize an escape) was suggested in Paul Scheuring by a colleague, Francette Kelley. Even if Scheuring immediately thought that it was an good idea, it did not know how to develop it to make a history which holds the road and to make it of it accept with a television channel. While reflecting there more, it ends up proposing the history of the brother condemned wrongly and the secondary intrigue of conspiracy. From there, it starts to write the screen of Prison Station-wagon and to design the characters. In 2003, it submits its project to Fox, but owes déchanter in front of the refusal of the chain, which thought that the public could never be interested in it. It then makes the turn of the other television channels, without success. The realizer and producing American Steven Spielberg takes note of this project and declares in Paul Scheuring that it is interested and wishes to make a film of it. But too taken by its engagement in the preparation of the film the War of the worlds , Spielberg does not cease pushing back the project. Some time later, after the enormous successes met by Lost, the missings and 24 hours stopwatch , Fox changes opinion and starts the production of the serial in 2004. Paul Scheuring affirms however that these two series did not have any influence on the writing in itself of the episodes. The pilot episode is turned one year after he wrote script and five months later, the serial is launched on Fox.

Distribution

Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell which plays respectively the two main characters Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows was the last to join the distribution. Miller was selected six days before the production starts and Purcell was committed three days later.

Concerning the role of Michael Scofield, Paul Scheuring explains the problems of casting: It was very difficult to find a candidate among all the possible actors of Hollywood. It was particularly difficult to find, one had all kinds of people. Some which took a large voice… One does not want to see this kind of the type leaving itself there and others on the contrary too sensitive! They pleurnichaient all the time! They thought that with only one thing: to leave the prison! . The producer Brett Ratner then remembered that he had noticed Wentworth Miller during his tests for the role of Superman in Superman Returns - role finally obtained by Brandon Routh. Wentworth Miller remembers: … that it passed to the last minute. I received script one Friday of November 2004, I passed hearing next Monday and one gave me the answer Tuesday. Whereas turning began Monday according to. .

By receiving the scenario of the first episode, the first thought of Amaury Nolasco is that it is ( surely one of these pilot episodes forsaken by the television channels ) since the majority of the series started the production of their episode pilot at the same time. Acknowledging that he does not like to read, Nolasco is amazed by the history which he finds ( really enthralling ). Before its last hearing for the role of Fernando Sucre, Nolasco is very nervous, particularly when Paul Scheuring entrusts to him that it is his favorite choice. Ultimately, it is retained.

After having read script, Wade Williams refuses to interpret the role of Brad Bellick because it finds it ( horrible and odious ). Its loathing comes owing to the fact that he is father of a four year old little girl. However, its agent persuades it all the same to audition, it obtains the role of Bellick then. In addition, Sarah Wayne Callies is also the first to belong to the distribution of the main actors. After her last test in the studios of Fox, Sarah Wayne Callies joined her car where it realizes that it left her keys inside by closing her car. While it awaits the break-down mechanic, it receives a call of its agent that he informs to him that she is committed in the series.

The producers have to face problems of timetable and casting for certain characters. Thus, Jeff Perry replaced John Billingsley for the role of Terrence Steadman when this one was engaged to hold a regular role in a series of the chain ABC, The Nine. Camille Guaty, which plays the part of the Sugar small-friend, Maricruz Delgado, was also committed on this series. In the same way, Patricia Wettig, which interprets Caroline Reynolds, obtained one of the main roles of another series of ABC, Brothers and Sisters . This is why, the two actresses remained absent during the major part of the second season. Moreover, starting from the a Simple unknown (2x14), the name of Marshall Allman was withdrawn from the credits.

Turning

The majority of the scenes of the first season of Prison Station-wagon were turned in the old prison of Joliet (Illinois).

External scenes were filmed in the neighborhoods of Chicago (in particular the international airport), Woodstock and Toronto with the Canada. Prison Station-wagon spent 2 million dollars per episode in the State of Illinois, which cost the production 24 million dollars for the year 2005. All the places of turning (Little Elm, Decatur and Mineral Wells) are in a radius of 30 minutes of Dallas and were selected to represent various American cities. Each episode is turned in eight days and roughly 1,4 million dollars are introduced into the local economy by episode. The production expects to spend approximately 50 million dollars in the area of Dallas.

At the time of the third season, turning will continue in Dallas with catches of additional sights in Florida and in Louisiana, the tattooing, which entirely recovers the top of the body of Michael Scofield, is very present in the first season of the serial. The part of the tattooing which is located on the chest of Michael Scofield contains the plans of the underpasses of the prison, while on the back, the representation of the prison seen of the sky is incorporated in tattooing. Although Tom Berg knew perfectly that special effects would be used to emphasize the plans of the prison on tattooing, contours and the lines of tattooing were drawn to resemble a diagram as much as possible. As the writing of the scenarios advances, Berg is contacted to create very specific tattooings for the episode concerned. Principal tattooing is composed of several different pieces which are deposited one by one on the body of the actor. Once the zone of the body (where tattooing will be applied) is cleaned with methylated spirits, a series of transfers are placed on the skin and paper is then detached. After that, the pieces are stuck to the skin with a special adhesive and an impermeable cement with water, before finishing by filling each part with painting. In a general way, the process takes four to five hours and does not include the forty-five minutes used to withdraw false tattooing. At the time of the scenes where tattooing does not need to be entirely shown, for example when Michael wears a Tee-shirt, only the pieces for tattooings of the arms are applied. If tattooings were to be applied permanently, that would take time and that would be disproportionate compared to the time occupied by the hero in the serial.

Born in 1967, Tom Berg worked as a tattoer during eight years, then it moved towards the drawing of comics and video games. The realizer and producing Brett Ratner engaged it on his film red Dragon to carry out the tattooing of the serial killer. Having appreciated this collaboration, Ratner again called upon him for Prison Station-wagon .

In more the creator of the serial, Paul Scheuring kiffe the piece… I prefer that, rather than the fans are dissatisfied, because for me there is the creator of the serial which is of agreement”. Controversies

In the United States

The serial is classified " TV-14" (does not correspond to children of less than fourteen years) in the United States and Canada. Because of the framework and scenario, Prison Station-wagon mainly seeks to target the age bracket of the 18-34 years. He sees himself reproached too adult contents including scenes of violence, the use of a believed language, scenes with sexual character and references to the drug taking or drugs. In particular, of criticisms were raised by preserving and very influential American association, Parents Television Council , about the schedule of passage of the serial (20h00). It estimates that it is not appropriate any more since the serial presented some scenes of nudity or sexual activity.

In addition, on October 24th, 2006, Donald and Robert Hughes start a lawsuit against Fox, the executive producer and the creator of the serial, Paul Scheuring, for plagiarism and claim damages. They affirm that in 2001, they sent to Fox their manuscript based on their personal experience of escape from a prison for young delinquents. In the the Sixties, Donald Hughes conceived and organized successfully the escape from his brother, Robert Hughes, who was imprisoned wrongly.

In France

To diffuse it with 20:50 in " premium time " , M6 voluntarily edulcorated the serial. With this intention, it removed certain scenes and required company of doubling to change the direction of several sentences during doubling into French. Nevertheless, these provisions were not considered to be sufficient by the Superior council of audio-visual the (SCUMS) since on October 24th, 2006, estimating that the serial present, with the eyes of the Council, many scenes of violence in a perturbing prison context for young children , it meant in writing with the chain that the diffusion is accompanied by descriptive the " Disadvised with less than twelve years " and consequently that in the future it is diffused of second part of evening. Taking into account the excellent audiences which Prison Station-wagon obtained, this decision is heavy of consequence for the chain. The president of the group M6, Nicolas de Tavernost, estimates that this decision would be inequitable with respect to M6 insofar as other concurrent chains diffuse sometimes more violent series on their antenna at this hour. . It is an allusion to the detective series the Experts like its derivative, which the rival chain TF1 also diffuses in premium-time. He adds: We are obviously been willing to make the cuts which are essential in this series, cuts which we make already spontaneously. . M6 made public in the newspaper Parisian the of November 23rd, 2006, a survey ordered with IFOP on November 4th, 2006 to know what the televiewers of the supposed violence of Prison Station-wagon thought. With the question: Is Prison Break adapted to programming in premium time? , the answer is yes to 82%. Then, Are you shocked by the violence of the series? , 78% the probed televiewers answered not. Lastly, Is there more violence in Prison Station-wagon than in films, telefilms or currently diffused series? , the answer again was not to 73%.

Following an equitable relief carried out by M6, SCUMS agreed to revise its decision the January 22nd 2007 and to differently classify each episode of the first season. Eleven episodes out of twenty-two (2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 12, 15, 17, 19, 22) are placed of category III, which means that it is interdict to diffuse them before 10 p.m. SCUMS also recommend a general warning at the beginning of each evening, calling with a particular vigilance because of the heterogeneity of their level of classification . This is why, at the time of the repeat broadcast of the first season of Prison Station-wagon on the chain W9, it is not always the same number of episodes each Sunday. Frederic de Vincelles, codirigeant it of W9, precise which they have of to calculate the number of episodes to be programmed so as to respect the recommendations of SCUMS. From where evenings with three episodes and others to two. .
