Priory of Sion

The Priory of Sion , mentioned for the first time in 1956, is a Secret society fictitious invented by the French mystifier Pierre Plantard. In a series of false documents deposited with the National library in the middle of the Years 1960 and entitled secret Files of Henri Lobineau , Plantard presents the Priory like a brotherhood going up to 1099, been dependant on the Ordre of the Temple and whose mission would have been to preserve the secrecy of a hidden descent of the Mérovingiens for the restoration of a monarchy mérovingienne in France.

The “myth”

To believe the secret Files of them , false documents considered as the files of the Priory of Sion, fraternity in question would have counted among its members a great number of characters who appear among most famous of the history and Western civilization more or less related to the occultism:

Always according to these secret files, the Priory of Sion included/understood 1.093 members, structured in seven levels. As one rises in the hierarchy, the number of the members divides by three, until the load of nautonier, exerted by a person alone.

the crowned Enigma indicates that the Priory would have formerly constituted of other secret organizations such as the Templiers, the Rosicrucian brotherhood, the Francs-Maçons… the secrecies surrounding the Priory of Sion would also include the Alchimie, as well as the legendary topics relating to the Croisades and the Templiers (mysteries of the Famille Sinclair, Bérenger Saunière, the treasure of Rennes-the-Castle) and others still…

Reality

Although the Priory of Sion has an “official” existence, reality is much less mysterious and esoteric: it is about a Association founded law of 1901 the May 7th 1956 by Pierre Plantard (general secretary), André Bonhomme (president), Jean Deleaval (vice-president), Armand Defago (treasurer) and whose statutes are deposited with the sub-prefecture of Saint-Julien-in-Genevese (Haute-Savoie). It takes for subtitle the acronym CIRCUIT (Knighthood of institution and catholic rule and independent union traditionalist) and as emblem a white cock. Sapling, shown of fraud in front of French justice in 1992 acknowledged its trickery which was supposed to put it on the throne of France as a descendant of the Mérovingiens.

The December 27th 2002, an official statement was published on official headed notepaper, announcing the reactivation of the company publicly. The message was signed of Gino Sandri, former private secretary of Pierre Plantard, under the title of general secretary, and of an anonymous, supposed woman being the new nautonier. However, of many experts transfer an advertizing blow there.

Literary fiction

But in spite of this consent, of many Anglo-Saxon authors added with this modern myth, creating a tangle without end of theories and against-theories.

In 1982, the authors of alternative history Henry Lincoln, Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh obtains Sapling all the necessary informations to write the international Best-seller the crowned Enigma . They add in this test that the dynasty mérovingienne would go down directly from Jesus and Marie-madeleine and that, accordingly, the mission of the Priory - that they present as real - would be thus to hide the existence of this “holy line”. The three joint authors established a bond between this mission and the topic of the Graal, traditionally associated with Templiers, by claiming that the “Graal” would be only one metaphor to indicate this supposed descent of the Christ. But, actually, Pierre Sapling forever confirmed this assumption. It was defended some even when it was discredited, by supposing a more recent origin connected to the enigma of Rennes-the-Castle.

Umberto Eco, in its novel of 1988 the Pendulum of Foucault , illustrated the system of association without proof which constitutes the base of the alleged secret society.

In the series of historical novels the Children of Graal (1991 with 1997) of Peter Berling, the Priory of Sion protects there the two heroes, Roç and Yesa, which are presented there like descendants of Jesus. It also puts in scene Guillaume de Gisors and Marie de Saint-Clearly, two of the large Masters of the company.

Dan Brown, as for him, took again all these topics to build the intrigue of sound Da Vinci Code . The screen of this novel is actually based on the history of the Abbé Salt box of Rennes the Castle. Around the relation between Jesus-Christ and Marie-madeleine, on whom the novel of Dan Brown declines her enigma, the Priory of Sion is grafted. The secret society is presented here like one of the keystones of the hypothetical descent of Jesus-Christ. This fiction sails thus between pretense of truth and perfume of plot and in which Leonard De Vinci, the Graal Saint (under a a little particular symbolic system), Templiers, Cathares and the Freemasons come to be added to amplify the mystery.
