The principles (of Latin princeps , First) are the soldiers first line (from where their name) then later on of the second line in a Roman Légion of the first centuries of the Roman République.
The principles were soldiers experienced in the maturity of the age. Their armaments consisted of a Coat of mail, the Lorica hamata borrowed from the Gaulois, of a short Glaive, the Gladius taken to the Spaniards, and from one or two Javelot S, the Pilum , made to twist with the impact in a enemy Bouclier in order to handicap the adversary in its movements and to prevent it from re-using it against its former owner.
After the reform of the Army operated by Marius, they formed the second line in each Cohorte, tactical unit smaller than the legion.
